MY DAILY SKINCARE REGIMEN FOR COMBINATION OILY SKIN TYPES (UPDATED)

If you haven’t heard: flawless makeup starts with GREAT skin! I can’t tell you all how many times I’ve been standing at a makeup counter and heard how gorgeous and smooth my skin was (which came as a shocker to me). I didn’t think I had great skin due to an occasional dark spot or breakout, keyword being occasional, but from everyone else, I clearly had some damn good skin! I pride myself on taking care of me– hair and skin included.

I’m not ashamed to say that I scour the web, drugstores, or makeup counters to find great skincare products. No, I don’t use anti-aging products yet, but I use products that are appropriate for my skin in this phase of life. This way, I won’t have a ton of issues to combat at once later on. Starting a great skincare regimen in your 20s can help in the fight against wrinkles and other skin conditions including irreversible dark and age spots. Tiny changes in your skincare regimen can help protect your skin now rather than waiting to start in your 30s, 40, etc.

Each morning, I use a total of 7-8 products and 1 tool to cleanse, moisture and protect my skin. Here they are below (in order of appearance):

Clarisonic Mia 2 ($150)

The Clarisonic Mia 2 is leading in sonic skincare cleansing. It cleans 6x better than your hands alone! “In just 60 seconds, its sonic action removes impurities from pores so that creams, serums, and moisturizers are more effective. And with regular daily use you’ll notice a reduction in dry patches, oily areas, and blemishes” (sephora.com)

Features: – 2 speeds – Int’l pLik charger for worldwide use – Improved user interface indicating speed and charge functions

The Clarisonic was definitely one of my best purchases in 2013. I definitely have noticed a difference in my skin; the amount of residue and dirt left on my cotton balls after toning has decreased greatly. My face is so much cleaner, clearer and fresher than before!

You have the option to choose from various brush heads– sensitive, normal, delicate, deep pore, and acne. I’ve used both the sensitive and deep pore brush heads, but I favor the deep pore one because I get a really clean feeling and it helps to remove the excess oil.

Seaweed Deep Cleansing Facial Wash from the Body Shop ($13.50)

The Seaweed Deep Cleansing Facial Wash is a great gel cleanser for combination oily skin. It is “a mild, oil-free and soap-free highly foaming cleansing gel that effectively deep cleanses to clear open pores and rinse away excess oils, make-up, impurities and daily grime. Leaves the skin feeling cleansed and purified” (thebodyshop.com).

Ingredients: Water (Solvent/Diluent), Sodium Laureth Sulfate (Surfactant), Polysorbate 20 (Emulsifier), Cocamide DEA (Surfactant), PEG-150 Distearate (Surfactant), Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate (Surfactant), Sodium Cocoamphoacetate (Surfactant), Phenoxyethanol (Preservative), Sodium Chloride (Viscosity Modifier), Fragrance (Fragrance), Citric Acid (pH Adjuster), Methylparaben (Preservative), Propylene Glycol (Humectant), Menthol (Fragrance/Cooling Agent), Disodium EDTA (Chelating Agent), Fucus Vesiculosus (Bladderwrack) Extract (Skin Conditioning Agent), Butylparaben (Preservative), Ethylparaben (Preservative), Linalool (Fragrance Ingredient), Butylphenyl Methylpropional (Fragrance Ingredient), Isobutylparaben (Preservative), Propylparaben (Preservative), Benzyl Alcohol (Preservative), Benzyl Salicylate (Fragrance Ingredient), Carrageenan (Chondrus Crispus) Extract (Natural Additive), Citronellol (Fragrance Ingredient), Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone (Fragrance Ingredient), Tocopherol (Antioxidant)

I love how this cleanser works for my oily combination skin. It is a gel cleanser so it works with my skin rather than against it. It cleans my skin while balancing the excess oil. Unfortunately, I will have to discontinue my use of this product as it is loaded with parabens; I’m upset I didn’t notice this before. I will be on the hunt for a paraben-free gel cleanser.

Clinique Clarifying Lotion #3 for Combination Oily Skin ($13-29)

Clinique’s Clarifying Lotion is an exfoliant that helps to remove impurities and residue. I love the clarifying lotion because “the smoothing formula whisks away pore-clogging oil and flakes to reveal a clearer complexion. It helps control excess oil to minimize breakouts and keep skin feeling clean” (sephora.com).

Ingredients: Water/Aqua/Eau, Alcohol Denat, Salicylic Acid, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel), Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Trehalose, Sodium Hyaluronate, Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Disodium EDTA, BHT, Phenoxyethanol, Benzophenone-4, Ext. Violet 2 (CI 60730), Red 6 (CI 15850), Orange 4 (CI 15510)

I love how the clarifying lotion removes the dead skin and residue from my face without having to rub too hard. Toners are a great way to close your pores after washing your face and this does a great job! I’ve been using this for well over a year now, and I’ve definitely seen an improvement in my skin.

MAC Cosmetics Fix + ($21)

This has been one of my favorites for years! I first started using it during my make-up application to apply my liquid make-up (foundation & concealer) and set my make-up when I’m done. Now, I use it after my toner to refresh my skin and prep it for my serums and moisturizers. It’s infused with vitamins and minerals and helps to hydrate my skin.

The Fix + Spray is “an aqua-spritz of vitamins and minerals, infused with a calm-the-skin blend of green tea, chamomile, cucumber, topped off with the fresh, natural, energizing scent of Sugi. Adds radiance, finishes makeup. Spray it on. Skin drinks it up! (maccosmetics.com)”.

I’m so glad I thought to incorporate this into my daily regimen. It’s a great way for me to refresh my skin after using my clarifying lotion. It gives me just enough hydration to avoid drying out my skin and it doesn’t make my face sticky. The boost of vitamins & minerals are a plus, AND it smells great!

Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector ($49.50-138):

IF there is ANYTHING that I swear by, it has to be this! The Clinique Clinical DSC is amazing. It was “dermatologist-developed to be safe, comfortable. Yet in clinical trials our serum was comparable to a leading prescription ingredient in a visibly reducing dark spots- a verified 58% improvement at 12 weeks. For all skin tones: See results starting in just 4 weeks, with a visible reduction in age spots and acne scars. Also appropriate for backs of hands and chest, too (clinique.com)”.

My neck seriously looked like one of the eggs in the picture because I have a bad habit of picking pimples (shame on me). The DSC has cleared my skin up tremendously. I use this after I mist my face with the Fix + Spray so that it really gets into my skin. I apply it to my neck and chin, which are my two most troubled areas. I must say I’m truly amazed by the results. It’s a bit pricey, but the results make it so worth it!

L’Oreal Youth Code Texture Perfector Serum Concentrate ($24.99)

This product was recommended to me by my friend, Khira. She’s been using the product for a while and has some of the best skin I’ve ever seen!

The youth code is a “luxurious serum visibly improves skin quality working on uneven skin texture with visible pores and fine lines” (lorealparisusa.com)”.

Ingredients: Aqua/Water, Cyclohexasiloxane, Glycerin, Alcohol Denat, PPG-15 Stearyl Ether, Dimethicone, BIS-PEG/PPG-16/16 PEG/PPG-16/16 Dimethicone, Polysilicone-11, Dipropylene Glycol, Polymethyl Methacrylate, Ammonium Polycryldimethyltauramide/Ammonium, Polycryloyldimethyl Taurate, Hydroxyethylpiperazine Ethane Sulfonic Acid, Eperua Falcata Bark Extract, Dimethiconol, Sodiym Hyaluronate, Inulin Lauryl Carbamate, Adenosine, Poloxamer 338, Disodium EDTA, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Lens Esculenta Seed Extract/Lentil Seed Extract, Xanthan Gum, Dextrin, Phenoxyethanol, CI 77891/Titanium Dioxide, Mica, Linalool, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Limonene, Citronellol, Parfum/Fragrance

The texture perfector is a must have. My skin is so much smoother and feels so much more supple than before. I am an oily combination skin type so for my skin to feel supple without being oily is a major plus.

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel ($14.50-26)

The moisturizing gel is one of my favorite products. The “oil-free moisture ‘drink’ developed by Clinique’s dermatologists to maintain optimal moisture balance for skins comfortable in the cheeks but oily in the T-zone or oily all over. Oil-free formula softens, smooths, improves” (clinique.com).

Ingredients: Water Purified, Dimethicone, Isododecane, Butylene Glycol, Bis-PEG-18 Methyl Ether Dimethyl Silane, Glycerin, Laminaria Saccharina Extract, Lactobacillus Ferment, Polygonum Cuspidatum Root Extract, Saccharomyces, Lysate Extract, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Hordeum Vulgare (Barley) Extract, Helianthis Annuus (Sunflower) Seedcake, Caffeine, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Sucrose, Chamomilia Recutita (Matricaria), Polysilicone-11, Pentylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol Dicaprate, Oleth-10, Laureth-23, Laureth-4, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Carbomer, Tromethamine, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Yellow 5, Red 4, Yellow 6

The gel is the perfect balance of hydration while keeping my skin matte. I can’t resist touching my face after using it. If you are an oily/combo oily skin type, I would definitely grab this moisturizer. It lives up to its promise and one pump goes a long way!

Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream ($7.44-8.99)

The Maybelline BB Cream is the “1-step wonder for a good skin day, everyday. Packed with 8 great skin benefits for instant skin perfection. Ideal for Normal Skin” (maybelline.com).

8 Benefits: – Blurs Imperfections – Brightens – Evens Skin Tone – Smoothes -Hydrates – Enhances – Protects with SPF 30 – 0% Oils & Heavy Ingredients

Ingredients: Active Ingredient: Titanium dioxide, 1.15% (Sunscreen); Inactive ingredients: Water, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Glycerin, Octyldodecanol, Silica, Pentylene Glycol, Octyldodecyl Xyloside, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Acrylate/Sodium Acrloyldiemthyl Taurate Copolymer, PEG-30 Diplyhydroxystearate, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Caprylyl Glycol, Disodium EDTA, Citric Acid, Polysorbate 80, Potassium Sorbate, Propylene Glycol, Methylisothiazolinone, Chamomilia Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract. May contain: Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides

I like this BB Cream because it has an SPF, which is extremely important for skin protection. I also like that it gives my skin a brighter appearance. It has a lightweight formula, it allows my skin to breathe, and it doesn’t make me shiny.

*I’ve incorporated a sunscreen into my skincare regimen as well. Although the BB cream is great because it has an SPF in it, it’s important to use a broad spectrum sunscreen for optimal protection. I’ve recently started using Coppertone’s ClearlySheer Faces for Sunny Days Face Lotion. It has a lightweight formula, it doesn’t leave a ‘white cast’ on my skin, and it has a very light, but pleasant smell. I have not noticed any breakouts since using it (which is great), and one pump is enough to cover my face and neck!

I hope you all found this post informative and interesting. I take pride in taking care of myself, and I am happy to share my tips with you all.

Until next time, Ashley, xo.
