MY SKINCARE ROUTINE FOR COMBINATION OILY SKIN TYPES (PART 2)

Hey all! I’ve updated my original skincare post, which includes the products and tools that I use on the daily to cleanse my skin, fade old scars, and moisturize. However, this post is to tell you about the extras that I didn’t include on the first post!

No skincare regimen is complete without some kind of exfoliant and a mask! I try to exfoliate twice a week and use my mask once a week (maybe twice a week if my skin is acting up). Exfoliating is a great way to slough off the dead skin cells and masks have different benefits. It all depends on your skin type and what you’re looking for the mask to do!

Seaweed Pore-Cleansing Facial Exfoliator ($15) This exfoliator was the best that I’ve come in contact with thus far. It is described as a “soap-free scrub that effectively deep cleanses blocked pores and exfoliates to remove dead skin cells, excess oils, impurities, and daily grime” (thebodyshop.com).

Ingredients: Water (Solvent/Diluent), Carbomer (Stabiliser/Viscosity Modifier), Sodium Laureth Sulfate (Surfactant), Olea Europaea (Olive) Seed Powder (Abrasive), Lauryl Betaine (Surfactant), Glycerin (Humectant), Hydrogenated Jojoba Oil (Skin-Conditioning Agent), Phenoxyethanol (Preservative), Sodium Hydroxide (pH Adjuster), Luffa Cylindrica Fruit (Natural Additive), Fragrance (Fragrance), Sodium Chloride (Viscosity Modifier), Methylparaben (Preservative), Disodium EDTA (Chelating Agent), Fucus Vesiculosus (Bladderwrack) Extract (Skin Conditioning Agent), Butylparaben (Preservative), Ethylparaben (Preservative), Linalool (Fragrance Ingredient), Butylphenyl Methylpropional (Fragrance Ingredient), Isobutylparaben (Preservative), Propylparaben (Preservative), Benzyl Alcohol (Preservative), Benzyl Salicylate (Fragrance Ingredient), Citronellol (Fragrance Ingredient), Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone (Fragrance Ingredient), Tocopherol (Antioxidant)

My Review: This exfoliator gave me the right amount of ‘scrubbing’ power. It has a ton of beads and that is something that I look for/like to feel when I’m exfoliating. I like to feel that my skin is being scrubbed because it shows that the product is doing its intended job. Although it is described as a ‘soap free scrub’ this product has SLS and does lather so it’s almost like a 2-in-1 kind of job– cleanser & exfoliator. After use, my skin felt clean and super smooth; I truly felt that the dead skin was sloughed away!

Unfortunately, I’ll have to cut my relationship with this exfoliator. Although it did a great job exfoliating my skin, this product does contain parabens! Parabens are used in cosmetics to “prevent the growth of microbes… and can be absorbed through the skin, blood, and digestive system” (http://safecosmetics.org/article.php?id=291). They have been linked to cancer and other disorders. I will discontinue my use of the product and will be on the hunt for a new, paraben-free exfoliator! *Full ingredient list was found on thebodyshop.com.

*This product has been replaced with the St. Ives Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub.

Seaweed Ionic Clay Mask ($22) Having a great mask on hand is the perfect way to suck out the impurities and toxins that your cleanser and exfoliator are unable to remove! This clay mask is described as “Detoxify and deep cleanse your skin with a weekly mask that uses natural ionic clay action to draw out impurities and control excess oil” (thebodyshop.com).

Ingredients: Kaolin, Water Helimoor Clay, Glycerin, Alcohol Denat., Bentonite, Talc, Lithothamnium calcarum, Maris Limus Extract, Pentylene Glycol, Fucus Vesiculosus Extract, Polysorbate 20, Myristamidopropyl PG-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate, Xanthan Gum, Bisabolol, Parfum, Butylene Glycol, Citric Acid, Disodium EDTA, Zinc PCA, Linalool, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzyl Salicylate, Laminaria Saccharina Extract, Denatonium Benzoate, Tocopherol, Chromium Hydroxide Green, FD&C Blue No. 1

My Review: I absolutely love this mask! It’s deep gray in color and it smells super amazing, but most importantly, it gets the job done. After using, my skin feels baby soft and the pores on/around my nose are smaller. My T-zone does not seem as shiny/oily, which is good, but my skin doesn’t feel tight and dry either, which is great. It shows that the product is able to do what it says– control excess oil, not suck it out completely! In my opinion, this mask is perfect for a combo oily skin type like mine.

*I’ve noticed that it sometimes separates, and a green colored liquid sits on top, but I use a clean finger (to avoid mixing in germs) to stir it up. I apply the mask all over my face and neck and wait for it to dry, which takes about 15-20 minutes. Not only does this mask lighten as it dries, but I sometimes notice little bubbles in the mask– which look yucky– especially in areas that need a little more work than others (nose, larger pores, etc.). When it’s time to rinse, I wet my hands and use a circular motion to loosen the mask. I rinse my face with cold water to close my pores and pat dry with my washcloth.

(Here I am below using my mask, lol)

These are the last two parts of my skincare regimen that have helped improve my skin tremendously. As mentioned before, I try to exfoliate 1-2 times a week and use my mask once a week (depending on how my skin is behaving). However, you are the only one that can determine your skin’s needs. Browse and research different products and do not pull a ‘me‘ and not read the ingredient list (smh)! I hope this helps all my combo oily skin types

Until next time, Ashley, xo.

Do you use an exfoliator and/or mask? If so, what brand(s)/product(s) do you use? Have you noticed a difference in your skin since using them? Comment below!
